Dollies
Dollies, Trollies, whatever they are called, they can make the life of a small-boat sailor much easier! We used to get ours from a little machine shop in Illinois that specialized in a number of tubular aluminum products, that did a great job, building strong dollies at a great price, custom-fitted to our boats. the Butterfly, C420, and CFJ.
Unfortunately, they went out of business in early 2018 due to the owner's health, leaving us dolly-less! We have looked long and hard for another supplier that would give us the price/quality that we wanted, at least as good as our previous dolly shop, but everything we tried came in at prices $200-300 higher.
We considered becoming a dealer for one of the less-expensive builders, but decided the added freight charges - first to us, then to the buyer - were too much of an extra cost. So if you are in the market for a dolly, we recommend you buy direct from the builder and spend roughly $40 less that what it would cost from a dealer. Our recommendation is Dynamic Dollies, they make a nice, simple dolly that works for the Butterfly that you can find at Dynamic Dollies. (NOTE: On Dynamic Dollies, we recommend you remove the rubber V that supports the bow of the boat, and replace it with an 8" long 2x4, carpeted, mounted flat in the same place on the frame. Your flat Butterfly hull will thank you!)
If you need a dolly for your C420, we recommend the C420 Bunk Dolly from our friends at Zim Sailing, it uses a rigid bunk that is fitted to the C420 hull instead of a strap, fitted to a stronger Dynamic Dolly frame.
